Help! My game won’t load

If games on Pogo don’t load for you, load very slowly, or give errors such as ‘Please wait, Loading,’ see below for information on the most common causes (and links to instructions on how to address them). Even still, there is a lot more information at your fingertips that you can find with some quick Internet searches.

First, let’s try to rule out some specific issues:

  1. Is the game you can’t load any of the following: Poppit!, Word Whomp, First Class Solitaire, or a game without an in-game Chat option?
  2. Does your computer lock up or reboot when you try to load a game?
  3. Does the game that won’t load have a Weekly Challenge going on, especially on Wednesdays?
  4. Are you running Microsoft Vista and having trouble patching?

If you can rule the above issues out, here are steps to take if the server status Answer says things are OK:

  1. First, clear your Browser Cache and Java Cache if you’re using Sun Java (#2).
  2. If that doesn’t solve the issue, please update your Java (#3).
  3. If the two previous steps don’t solve the issue, please read below about help with antivirus/firewall issues.
  4. Also, read our article about configuring the settings for your firewall or proxy server with Pogo.
  5. Furthermore, our article with information regarding pop-up blockers/anti-spyware/adware may help.

If Java is installed on your machine but not enabled

If you’re still having issues and you’re certain that Java is installed on your machine, it may be disabled. All mainstream browsers have an option for enabling Java, which ensures any applets that use it will function properly. For a complete list of per-browser instructions for enabling Java, visithttp://www.java.com/en/download/help/enable_browser.xml.

Here’s what to do if clearing your cache and making sure your Java is updated doesn’t resolve the issue.

The most common causes of problems that players encounter when playing our games are simply caused by anti-virus, firewall, ad blocking, and pop-up blocking software. The easiest way to determine if one or more of these is the cause of the problem is to simply disable them and see if the problem goes away. If the problem goes away, then the next step is to figure out how to configure the software to still protect your system without preventing you from playing our games. In this case, you should refer to the software’s manual or help files for detailed instructions on how to make the desired changes to the software.

Some common symptoms of this include:

  • “Cripes!” Errors
  • “Server too Busy” Errors
  • Cards disappear or do not appear
  • Other graphics do not appear or are distorted
  • “Game Loading” indicator never goes away
  • Profiles never appear
  • Table windows never open

Also, there are several types of maintenance steps that can be taken on a regular basis to try and prevent problems from occurring. This includes deleting Temporary Internet Files / Browser Cache and deleting Game Objects. We only officially support a few browsers as they are the most common and compatible with our site. They are: Netscape 7.x, Internet Explorer 6.x, Mozilla Firefox, and Safari for Mac OS X (and later versions of these browsers as applicable). If you do a search on the help site for “Cache,” you will find instructions on how to clear the cache for those browsers. In addition, Apple’s web site has an articlecontaining some helpful information about getting the Safari browser to work with Pogo games.

For Club Pogo members, you can follow these instructions on deleting objects in Internet Explorer. This is where the game files are actually stored with Fast Access on Club Pogo. Here’s how to do that:

  1. Open Internet Explorer (even if you normally use the AOL or MSN browser).
  2. Click Tools on the IE toolbar.
  3. Select Internet Options.
  4. In the middle of the Internet Options window, click the ‘Settings‘ button (located in the middle of theBrowsing History section).
  5. On the Settings screen, click the View Objects tab. This is where your browser stores the actual game applet.
  6. Look for any files in the list that are Pogo games. Things like ‘PopFu by Pogo’, ‘Freecell by Pogo’ and so on, and delete those.
  7. Click Yes to confirm the deletion of each file.

If you’ve followed the steps listed above and are still encountering difficulties, the issue could be a problem with our servers. Most often, we are already aware of these problems because we have received complaints from other members (or we notice that the number of players on the site is abnormally low or declining). The best thing to do is to check back again in an hour or two and see if the problem is gone. If all else fails, please contact us and let us know what problem you’re experiencing (including any error messages) and what you have tried so far to fix it.

Here is some information that is generally helpful in trying to track down the cause of the problems. Please try to include as much information as you can (so long as it pertains to your issue).

  • Date:
  • Time:
  • Time Zone:
  • Room Name:
  • Table Number:
  • Description of problem:
  • Steps taken so far to try and fix it:
  • Include screen names of those involved:
  • Include Java and browser information:

1. What is Java? Why do I need it to run Pogo games?

Java is a programming language created by Sun Microsystems. It’s unique among other programming languages because it was built to run on any operating system (Windows, Linux, Mac, etc). Almost all ofPogo‘s games are created with Java, and are constructed in a way so they may run right inside your web browser, using the Java Virtual Machine already installed with your browser.

Top of Section

2. How do I clear my Java cache? If you’re having problems running Pogo games, you should try clearing your Java cache. Please note: Javacache is different than your Browser cache. Clearing your Java cache can be a quick and easy fix. Please follow these steps if you are using a Windows platform:

  1. Click the following things in order: Start > Control Panel > Java.Note: If you do not see the Java icon, click on Switch to Classic View in the menu on the left-hand side, and this should allow you to see the Java icon.
  2. Under the General tab, click the Settings button located in the Temporary Internet Files section.
  3. Then click on Delete Files…
  4. A dialog box will appear. Make sure all the options are selected, and click OK.

This should probably be done whenever you encounter a problem with the way a game is functioning. Restarting your computer after doing so can also help the performance of the game.

Please Note: Clearing your Temporary Internet Files from your browser might not clear your Java cache. To make sure your Java cache is clear, you must clear your Java cache as instructed above.

You should also make sure you’re running the latest version of Java. If you are not sure if you have the latest version of Sun Java or not, please visit and follow the instructions.

3. How do I install or update Java?

If you’ve never installed Java on your computer, you’ll need to do so in order to play Pogo games. It’s not uncommon for new computers (particularly those with Windows XP) to ship without any form of Javainstalled, so don’t panic if you don’t have it. Java is a free download and is easy to install.

Below you will find two sets of instructions. One is for uninstalling Sun Java and one is for installing Sun Java. Following these processes should help you resolve any problems you are encountering with Java, such as getting errors saying something like ‘Java Not Found or Not Working.’ The instructions below are primarily for Windows users. 4. I got a ‘Java not found or not working’ error.

When you first load a game, our servers run a check on your Java to make sure it’s working. A ‘Java Not Installed or Not Working’ error usually means that your Java plugin or Virtual Machine is no longer functioning properly. If your Java is not working, the games won’t work.

If you’re getting this error, you should first try playing several different games. Here are some suggestions:

  • Word Whomp
  • Ali-Baba Slots
  • Cribbage (play with robots so you can leave if need be)
  • Ez-Win Bingo

If you get this error in all or most of the games, you should follow the instructions in number 3 to reinstall or upgrade your Java software.

If you only get this error in one game or a few games, you probably just need to re-download those games. Try clearing your browser’s cache and Java cache (follow instructions in number 2) as well, then restart your browser by closing it completely and re-launching it.

Please note: Windows 95 is no longer officially supported by Pogo.com. This was changed whenMicrosoft stopped issuing updates for it.

The Sun Java 2 plugin does not officially support Windows 95 (and you will receive a warning if you try to install it). Microsoft‘s support section says the plugin should work on most Windows 95 systems if you decide to continue with the installation. Since the plugin can’t damage your computer, it’s worth trying on yourWindows 95 system. If it doesn’t work, please use the Talk to a Game Advisor link to contact our support staff, and we’ll help you get it uninstalled and get your Java working.

Please follow the Clear Java Cache instructions as well; that way, you know your browser is starting on a completely clean slate (think of it as changing the oil in your car).
