Red: Happy holidays everyone! As always, we are the Tiki Brothers, and we are here to talk a little tech!
Green: Boy are we feeling the Holiday Spirit, or what Red? And in the interest of safety and holiday sprit we have agreed not to argue, and or drive each other crazy today.
Red: We decided? What? I think it was *you* decided that, since you didn’t want several lumps of lit coal in your stocking this year (which you might get anyway!)
Green: Haha, I guess you’re right Red. Either way, I figure, since we have to be bundled up in the grass hut all winter, it might be in my best interest to stay on your good side. In fact, I spent much of today making a list of all of the wonderful things about you, Red. Would you like me to read it?
Red: *Blinks* Uh… no. You really are out of your mind, Green! I have a better idea, let’s read this week’s question!
Walter L. from Seattle asks:
A little bird told me that I am getting a new computer for the Holidays. Will I lose all my progress, Tokens and everything? How can I get up and running with Pogo as quickly as possible. Also I plan on giving away my old computer to a friend, is there anything I should know?
Green: Hi Walt. Thanks for the question. Mind if I call you Walt? Of course you don’t. You’re in luck Sir Walter because all of your Ranks, Badges, the list of your friends on your Friends List, your Mini items, your Gems and Pogo messages are all on *our* servers — not your computer! Therefore, you will not lose anything associated with your Pogo account! With your new computer, simply connect to the Internet, open your web browser and type in www.pogo.com (since your old bookmark, won’t be there.)
But before you go too crazy, be sure you have your login name and password memorized! That information may have been saved in your old browser, but since you’re using a new browser it will no longer be there. Also remember your password is CaSe SeNsItIvE. So make sure have all the right letters capitalized (or not as the case may be).
Red: Uh… Green– don’t forget that progress on Pogo Downloadable games cannot be transferred to your new computer. This is because the games are saved locally on the downloaded games. Another thing is, if you’re going to be playing your old Downloadable games on your new computer, you will want to make sure you have your install code, and the email address they were registered under. You can simply download and install the free trial of all the old games you had installed on your old system and re-register them on your new system with the “Enter Registration Key” button.
Green: Oh yeah, I forgot about that, thank you Red. I’ll have to add your good memory to that list of great things about you!
Anyway, Walt, there are a few more things to consider. Your new computer will probably have Java installed, but it may not have the latest version of Java installed. You will want to make sure it’s up to date.
First, go to Java.com Site and hit the “Verify Installation.” It will tell you if there is an updated version of Java ready to install, or if you already have the latest version. The latest version as of this writing is update 9, or 1.5.0_09 by Sun Microsystems, but remember this can change at any time, so your results may vary.
For more information about Java and Java technology see our Tiki Brothers article!
Red: Walter, you will also want to make sure your new computer is using a standard browser. The supported browsers for Pogo are Internet Explorer 6 or 7, Firefox 2, and the AOL Browser. There are a few variants of these browsers that you might find installed on a new computer. Your best bet is to install one of these browsers instead, as it is the only way to make sure Pogo will work like it should.
Green: Oh, if you want to see some of the cool Animated Badges or Spotlights on Pogo you will have to make sure Adobe Flash is installed on your system. More than likely this will already be there, but you never know. Follow the instructions on the site to install it.
Red: Okay! And finally, although Green and I are not security experts, there are a few other things outside of Pogo you might want to do.
First, before you get rid of your old computer– you will want to go into your browsers settings and clear your “Auto complete” information. This is where your browsers stores passwords and logins for Pogo and other websites including stuff like your credit card information. You will definitely want to clear this information if you will no longer be using your old computer.
Assuming you’re using Internet Explorer, here’s what to do:
- Click on Start > Control Panel > Internet Options.
- Click on the Content tab. Click on “Auto Complete”.
- In the new window that pops up, click on the ‘Clear forms’ button (a confirmation box will appear).
- Click ‘OK’ to confirm.
This should clear out passwords you have stored in your web browser.
While you’re at it you will want to delete any cookies, and files in your browser cache. In your Internet Options, click on the “General” tab and press “Delete Cookies” and “Delete Files”, and confirm the delete.
Green: Oh, another great point Red! I’m going to add “is genuinely concerned about other people’s security” to my list of your attributes.
It’s true– you wouldn’t want to leave that information on your old computer! If you have any more worries about old information on your system, your best bet is to contact a dedicated computer security technician for advice on the best steps to take to secure your old computer before you gift it. Some people go so far as to do a reformat at system restore on their old systems.
Red: Great information, thanks for the advice. Green, you’re being so nice to me, it makes me wonder– what presents do you want for the holidays?
Green: Well, how about a surf-board that looks like a snowman? or a red wetsuit, with white frilly trimming, so I can look like Santa out there riding the waves? Oh! Oh! How about a snowboard that looks like a big candy cane?! Or! Or! Ummmm!
Red: Oh man, I’m sorry I asked! You drive me crazy! You’ll be lucky if you get a lump of coal! I’m never going to be able to find that stuff!
Green: How sweet! You know coal in its rawest form is astounding to look at! I’m going to add “appreciates beauty of nature” to that list of your attributes. And besides, you asked me what I wanted, not what I thought I could actually get! Haha!
Anyway, from you, Red, I’d be happy with nothing more than a hug!
Red: A hug? Sheesh! Now you’re scaring me. I’m not sure I can handle this new attitude, Red! To the rest of you, Happy Holidays from the both of us! Have a fun safe time. And if you’re still looking for that perfect gift for that special someone, don’t forget you can give the gift of Club Pogo for the Holidays!
