How Do You Report an Abusive Profile?

Hi Ms. Netiquette,

Firstly I’d like to thank you for a most interesting and informative column on Pogo. I read and enjoy it often.

My question is, can you report abuse on someone’s profile? Once while playing poker I read a rather rude person’s profile and was taken aback by the fact that he had under “Interests” the fact that he works on computers and some other computer things. Upon reading further under “More about me” he goes on to say something like “don’t upset me, mess with me or be rude with me because I CAN and WILL get into your computer and mess with your hard drive. You will never be able to use your computer again.”

Needless to say, I left the room for fear of making a faux paux. I really don’t believe he could do what he threatens to do but I thought this person should be reported somehow for his threatining profile. I have seen a few other profiles also. Is there anything that can be done?

– Down With Threats

Dear Down With Threats,

Thank you for writing. You ask a great question. The answer, I’m afraid, is not as simple as we would like it to be.

Yes, you can report abuse on someone’s profile. However, to do so requires a bit of work on your end.

If you run across an abusive or threatening profile, don’t worry about the Abuse Report Form, as the best way to handle it is through the Help Button.

Click the Help Button, and then choose the “Contact Us” tab. From there you will have to log in to the Help Site. Once you’ve logged in, choose the following Categories and Subcategories:

– Under “Platform & Game” choose “PC”
– Below that, choose “Pogo Games”
– Below that, you’ll see another field. You can leave this field blank, as this issue is not game specific.
– Under “Category” choose “Rules and Policies”
– Below that, choose “Terms of Service”
– From there, fill out the “Question Data” field, including the exact screen name of the player, and what was placed in the profile.
– Click “Submit Question”

Once you’ve submitted your question, you will receive a “Reference Number.” This number shows that your incident has been properly submitted, and you will receive a response.

Club Pogo members, you’ll be interested to know that this is the same process by which you should report offensive Mini captions.

Dear Ms. Netiquette,

Upon reading your recent article “Ms. Netiquette’s Game Etiquette Dos and Don’ts,” I decided to write you about some trouble I’ve been having in Pogo games. I generally try not to talk to other people in game rooms and tables for certain privacy reasons.

Recently, I have been accused of cheating in games, especially Shuffle Bump, or that I am using a cheating program because I don’t talk and am a master or expert. It was hard, but I did not respond in order to avoid geting into an argument or getting reported for spamming or something like that. I ended up leaving as soon as the game was done, having avoided a conflict; but I was wondering how you should go about dealing with players like this if you’re like me. They were polite, but they jumped to conclusions just because they couldn’t beat me.

– Jud

Dear Jud,

When they say “it’s lonely at the top,” this is the sort of thing they mean. When you are extremely good at something, like it or not, you will get people who are unhappy with your abilities. It’s unfortunate that they choose to behave like poor sports.

I assume that you are playing in one of the rooms under the Master tab. If you aren’t, then the easy answer is to make sure that from now on you do.

If you already are, then it appears you are probably playing against someone who should not be. So, what should you do? I would suggest you simply state “I play this game a lot, and have become very skilled, so I really have no need to cheat” and leave it at that. The person accusing you of cheating will hopefully recognize that his or her comment was uncalled for and will apologize. If the player continues to believe that you are cheating, then simply mute him or her and find another partner.

Dear Ms. Nettie,

I am one of those persons your column seems to condemn. You know, the rude, obnoxious player who says almost anything. I hang with a group of fun people in Pogo and we don’t mean any harm to anyone. We are all hardworking individuals who just want to relax and enjoy the fabulous Pogo games.

It seems to me, if someone wanders in a particular game and see’s the ongoing chat, as rude as it may seem, this person would either mute the “rude” players or just go to another room. It’s not just one or two individuals that contribute to the chat, it’s generally the whole room. Why is it if one person doesn’t like the chat, he or she has the option of reporting “rude” behaviour… shouldn’t Pogo require the MUTE?

– Senseless in SD

Dear Senseless in SD,

There are all sorts of different types of players on Pogo, and the purpose of this column is to guide people towards having a better game playing and social experience.

Believe it or not, rudeness and obnoxiousness do not violate our Terms of Service. This is why we heavily promote the use of the “mute” feature and the “turn off chat” feature. These tools allow people who do not want to see the chat or certain individuals the ability to turn off chat entirely, or just the chat of those individuals.

I never condone any type of rudeness, but what is “obnoxious” to one person is “just good fun” to another. If you look at the Abuse Report, there is no “Rude” or “Obnoxious” option. The Abuse Report Form is strictly for serious violations of our Terms of Service.

While obnoxiousness and rudeness are not violations of the Terms of Service, I do strongly suggest that you use the Private Chat or find an Uncensored Room so that you may speak freely without worry of offending anyone.
