Who Are these Self-Proclaimed Room Monitors?

Dear Ms. Netiquette,

I am so very confused about who are the room monitors. I have seen a few people say they are room monitors and they have failed to produce proof. A few months ago I thought I remembered reading in your answers that they would have a blue badge if they were working with or for Pogo.

This really bothers me as they are using this to their advantage to get women to believe everything they say and I do not think that is right. As far as I know that is what they are there to try and prevent. Please help me and others to resolve this problem so that when there are true monitors in the room people wont be so leery about playing or talking or even believing what others have to say.

Knowing that Pogo has people out there that say they are helping Pogo monitor the rooms is hard to believe. I would think that they would have true monitors for the rooms. So again I am asking for your help in resolving this issue for me and for others as I know there are others that have the same question(s).

Puzzled

Dear Puzzled,The people who monitor the rooms are rarely actually present in the rooms. They work behind the scenes reading the abuse reports and they have the ability to take action on offending accounts from outside of the chat room.

Pogo personnel acting in official capacity will always have the Blue Star next to their screen name. And their screen name will always begin with “Pogo_.” For instance if Beatrice Blooop were to work for Pogo, she might choose the screen name Pogo_Blooop to use for official Pogo business. If she is acting in official capacity, she would appear as “Pogo_Blooop” and would have the blue star next to her name. All “Pogo_” accounts automatically have the blue star next to their screen names.

Impersonating Pogo Staff is a violation of the Terms of Service that everyone agreed to upon becoming a Pogo member. Thus, if you see someone claiming that they are a Pogo room monitor, then by all means, report them. You can do this by using the Report Abuse feature. Simply right click their screen name and look for the “Report Abuse” option. At that point our REAL Pogo room monitors will handle it.

Ms. Netiquette,

I have received a message stating that if I send it on to everyone on my friends list that Pogo would either give me a year free membership, or give me $29.99 dollars back. All I have to do is take a survey.

Is it true? I looked through the news section, and could not find any thing on it. Or is this just another one of those stupid spam letters? I hate getting those all the time.

Thanks,

Confused In Illinois

Dear Confused In Illinois,I must confess that I am surprised by the number of people who have forwarded this to me asking me if there is any truth to this.

There is absolutely no truth to this message whatsoever. This is one of those stupid junk letters.

Let’s apply some logic to this and think about it. This letter is stating that Pogo will give you a free year of membership if you forward this message on. Why would Pogo even consider doing such a thing? If you have something to tell someone, do you just send your message to some random person and ask them to send it on in hopes that it will eventually reach the right person? What could Pogo possibly gain? If Pogo wants you to fill out a survey, we will create a survey and ask people to take it in a much more direct way.

Nearly every letter you receive in your messages box that has been forwarded numerous times is junk mail. Not all of them make untrue claims like this one does, but it’s still junk mail.

Before you click that “Select All” from the “Insert Player Names” in your Friends list box, remember that not everyone appreciates receiving forwarded e-mail. Maybe you think the joke is funny, or the story is moving, or that Will Fences will be sending you 5 cents everytime you forward that message, but not everyone on your Friends list agrees.

Dear Ms. Netiquette,

You may have already answered my question and I didn’t see it.

I found a room where the players in there were so very nice. I continued to play in that room for a few years.

Now… around 5:00 in the evening (probably a later time for those back east), they start a “Praise the Lord” time where most of them think they are witnessing for the Lord, and will say repeatedly say “Amen,” and “I’m praying for you,” and “the Lord will help you,” etc., going on and on with this “church meeting.” Others who are not with this group, can’t chat with each other, because they hog the chat space.

I know I can close the chat or go to another room, but why do I have to leave when they hog the whole chat screen? Should they be making the evening time not available for others that were there first? I am a Christian also, but I don’t witness in public in that way making the chat room unavailable for others who would like to chat a little bit with another friend. If you chat with a friend, their answers get lost among the “Praise the Lord” group.

Your opinion please.

Just Want to Chat

Dear Just Want to Chat,My opinion is probably the same as yours. It is annoying when people take over chat rooms to discuss their topic of choice at the exclusion of everyone else.

But it’s not a Terms of Service violation unless they are actually screen scrolling or purposefully loading up the chat with gobbledygook.

It would be nice if this group of people could find an empty room to meet, and you might politely suggest that. If their sole purpose is to hold a meeting, then they should be able to find a relatively empty room in one of the less frequented Pogo games.

You might simply say “Hello, I appreciate the fact that you want to hold a meeting here, but we were in the middle of a conversation. You might want to have a meeting in Such&Such game where there are several empty rooms.” That allows you to let them know that you would prefer that they not take over the room and gives them an alternative. Hopefully they will understand and decide to hold these types of meetings in empty rooms.

But they might not, and unfortunately, this is the reality of the way things are in the Pogo chat rooms, and the best thing you can do is to consider your options and take the option that is most appealing. In this case you could tell your friends you’d like to continue the discussion in a different room, and then change rooms, or you could go into private chat, or you could turn off chat altogether, or you might choose to just stop chatting.
